Top dog friendly beaches in South Africa

South Africa is a nation of dog lovers, and as dog lovers, there’s nothing better than seeing our four legged companions enjoying the sunshine as they bound along the shoreline and splash through the surf on a beautiful sandy beach.

And since sandy paws equals happy dogs, we’ve sniffed out some dog friendly beaches along our beautiful coastline where you and your best friend can run, swim and frolic in the waves.

CAPE TOWN

Beaches which allow dogs off lead include:

  • Clifton 1st
  • Clovelly
  • Beta beach in Bakoven
  • Glencairn Beach
  • Sunset in Sea Point
  • Froggy Pond
  • Mouillie Point Beach
  • The middle section of Hout Bay beach
  • Long beach Kommetjie
  • Long beach Simon’s Town

 

Beaches where only dogs on leashes are allowed:

  • Graaff’s Tidal Pool
  • Capricorn
  • Nine Miles
  • Danger
  • Milton
  • Milton tidal pool

 

Beaches where dogs are allowed before 9am and after 6pm between November and April include:

  • Big Bay
  • Blaauwberg
  • Camps Bay
  • Clifton 4th
  • Llandudno
  • Melkbosstrand
  • Milnerton, at the lighthouse
  • Milnerton Lagoon
  • Saunders Rock, both the tidal pool and the beach
  • Three Anchor Bay
  • Sunrise
  • Three Anchor Bay

 

DURBAN:

  • Salmon Bay (Durban North)
  • Tiffany’s Beach, Salt Rock
  • Garvies
  • Glenashley
  • La Mercy
  • Trafalgar
  • uShaka
  • Vetches
  • Durban Beachfront Promenade – on leash only
  • Brighton Beach, the Bluff
  • Treasure Beach, the Bluff
  • Umhlanga Promenade – on leash only
  • Virginia Beach
  • Christmas Bay, South Coast
  • Umkomaas, South Coast

 

PORT ELIZABETH

Please note that Port Elizabeth has very strict rules regarding dogs on beaches. Dogs must be on lead at all times in public areas and can only be permitted at the following beaches:

 

  • St. Georges Strand area – outside bathing area only
  • Wells Estate area – back of dune areas & cycle way only
  • Blue Water Bay car park area – outside bathing area only
  • Swartkops River Mouth & Beach Area – whole area
  • Brighton Beach – from Swartkops River Mouth to Pier
  • Kings Beach – Grassed Areas only
  • Pollock Beach – Grassed Area only
  • Pipe to Flatrock Area – Beach and Grassed Areas

Maitlands Sea – Outside bathing area only, excluding dune sands.
